Big Yam Potatoes Gathering

I want to go to the first Big Yam Potatoes Gathering. The Mississippi Fiddlers Association will hold it at Jefferson College May 16-18. It also has this page on MySpace. The festival is named for the previously blogged fiddle tune “Great Big Yam Potatoes” and the album Great Big Yam Potatoes: Anglo-American Fiddle Music from Mississippi. The Enterprise-Journal, my hometown newspaper, published this short article about it. Now I just need to find a way out of other obligations.

RIP AFC

A friend sent the word that Al Copeland died this week. He founded the often blogged Popeyes restaurant chain. The Times-Picayune/nola.com has the sad news here and here. NPR‘s Morning Edition covered it. The New York Times has this obituary, and the Washington Post has one, too. Andrew Sullivan posted on his Atlantic blog. Let us mourn his death. My plan is to eat a two piece spicy white with fries.

Stagger Lee

The Folk School Student Showcase was last night at the Schlafly Tap Room. I love the Folk School, and the showcase is a great night every time.

The Beginning of the End, my Old-Time Ensemble class, closed the show. We opened with the recently bloggedOld Corn Liquor” from the playing of Joe Thompson. As mentioned before, he mentors the blogged Carolina Chocolate Drops. Our “Cotton Eyed Joe” comes from the Volo Bogtrotters. The last number is a favorite topic and a Saint Louis classic. I sang lyrics from personal favorite Mississippi John Hurt over string band music based on Foghorn‘s version, and they felt right.

Refined Peanut Butter

With the death of William F. Buckley, Jr., I came across this post. I attended the recording of Firing Line‘s final episode. Through my attendance, I experienced more Firing Line than I had before it or have since it. Neither Buckley nor his media meant much to me, but the post led me to this article (cached) by Buckley praising peanut butter. I blogged about this wonderful food recently. He got at least one thing right.

Kottke!

When I saw this post on Kottke, I emailed guest blogger Deron Bauman with a link to my post about Wordplay. He updated the post with the link, and it has been a banner day for traffic.
