Ozark Independence Day

A group headed to the Ozarks for Independence Day weekend. We camped at Dakota Ridge Campground and Cabins outside Lesterville right on a fork of the Black River. It was easy and beautiful. We enjoyed the river and shot off fireworks to celebrate. We also made a trip to blogged and always terrific Johnson’s Shut-Ins. I did not think the summer would afford this much freedom, and I was happy to take it.

Winter’s Bone

I saw the movie Winter’s Bone with H at the Landmark Plaza Frontenac. It is the bleak story of a young woman trying to save her family. It is set against in the rural Ozarks that have been devastated by methamphetamine. There is little joy in the story, but the heroine is compelling. Since we saw it, it has opened in more theaters locally, and I imagine elsewhere, too. It is worth seeing.

A Monday at the Atomic Cowboy

STLtoday.com published “Focus! There’s lots going on at this Grove hot spot” about the Atomic Cowboy. The writer visited on previously blogged open mic night. I made it out that night, but I did not meet her. The article mentions blogged Ryan Spearman, Westley and Alice, all friends. I also ran into several ultimate frisbee friends that night. I think the schedule was too booked that night for me to get a spot, though. I will be back, probably a week from tomorrow, and I hope to see more friends there in the future.

My fingerstyle guitar class blog

I blogged about teaching Introduction to Fingerstyle Guitar through the Music of “Mississippi” John Hurt at the beloved Folk School. We had our first class last Wednesday, and I had a great time. I think it went well for the students, too. To provide supplementary information and recordings, I started the companion blog Introduction to Fingerstyle Guitar. I will try to update it at least weekly during the class.
